Nanostructured Materials and Coatings for Biomedical and Sensor Applications

Description

This volume contains papers that were presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Nanostructured Materials and Coatings for Biomedical and Sensor Applications held in Kyiv, Ukraine, 4-8 August, 2002. A total of 104 scientists from 14 countries participated in our ARW, making it a really international event. Participants ranged from graduate students to senior researchers. They presented 16 tutorial lectures, 20 short talks and more than 70 posters. Invited speakers, from NATO and Partner countries, presented some of the most recent developments in physics, chemistry and technology of nanosized materials. A broad range of speakers having international standing and representing NATO and partner countries, as well as university, industrial and govemment research laboratories participated in this meeting and wrote papers for this volume. Foregoing ARW gathered together the scientists working in the area of nanosized materials and coatings and their applications in biomedicine and sensors. The first objective of this AR W was to discuss the current research covering a wide range of physical and chemical properties of biomaterials and their use. Active discussion of oral presentations and posters, and the round table discussion gave a good opportunity to researchers from academia and industry to discuss the achievements in this field and outline future directions in terms of technological developments and product commercialisation in the fields of biomedicine and sensors. Particularly, advanced ceramics and nanostructured carbons were covered in many presentations.

A companion to the award-winning Browse's Introduction to the Symptoms and Signs of Surgical Disease, Nanostructured Materials and Coatings for Biomedical and Sensor Applications free download pdf this volume provides clear insight into how the pathological features and extent of disease dictate necessary diagnostic investigations and treatment. Like its established partner, it is a practical and concise textbook that is easy to read and use. The content is highly structured, with each chapter divided into three sections: * Relevant Pathology provides a brief description of the important pathological features of the disease relevant to the clinical diagnosis, investigations, and treatment * Investigations covers significant clinical findings, including radiological, biochemical, haematological, immunological, pathological, and genetic * Treatment reviews all aspects of management Other key features include more than 300 high-quality clinical photographs and 60 color line drawings to enhance textual explanations, as well as learning and review boxes to aid understanding and provide a tool for self-assessment. The book is essential reading for all medical students undertaking a surgical rotation or preparing for their surgical exams.

The Anthropology of Security : Perspectives from the Frontline of Policing, Counter-terrorism and Border Control

Description

In a post-Cold War world of political unease and economic crisis, processes of securitisation are transforming nation-states, their citizens and non-citizens in profound ways. The book shows how contemporary Europe is now home to a vast security industry which uses biometric identification systems, CCTV and quasi-military techniques to police migrants and disadvantaged neighbourhoods. This is the first collection of anthropological studies of security with a particular but not exclusive emphasis on Europe. The Anthropology of Security draws together studies on the lived experiences of security and policing from the perspective of those most affected in their everyday lives. The anthropological perspectives in this volume stretch from the frontlines of policing and counter-terrorism to border control.

Seven superb short stories from the bestselling author ofCharlie and the Chocolate Factory and The BFG!Meet the boy who can talk to animals and the man who can see with his eyes closed. And find out about the treasure buried deep underground. A cleaver mix of fact and fiction, this collection also includes how master storyteller Roald Dahl became a writer. With Roald Dahl, you can never be sure where reality ends and fantasy begins."All the tales are entrancing inventions." Publishers Weekly The Anthropology of Security : Perspectives from the Frontline of Policing, Counter-terrorism and Border Control download ebook "" - reproducible blackline masters for students to use as worksheets for an activity Unique in its affirmation of both an orthodox faith and sexual diversity, God and the Gay Christian has sparked heated debate, sincere soul searching, and widespread cultural change on the issue of what it means to be a faithful gay Christian."

Denise Deegan: And for Your Information: a Novel

And for Your Information: a Novel

Description

Everyone thinks they know who I am - ditzy Sarah, who cares more about appearances than she does about anything real. And yeah, I do care about what people think of me. Take my friends Alex and Rachel. We all go to Strandbrook College, Dublin. We're supposed to be best friends. But Alex and Rachel - they're really close. They tell each other things that they would never tell me. I try not to mind. And then there's Simon. He's my sort-of boyfriend but we hardly see each other. And when we do, I feel like he doesn't really 'see' me, you know? Everything's such a mess right now. My dad left us to be with Her; my mum is really angry all the time; and my brother Louis, he just doesn't care. I guess that's why the shoplifting started. It makes me feel good. In control. I just want everything to change. And it does. The day I got caught ...

At age 31, office worker Chikage Deguchi feels she missed her chances at love and success. When word gets out that she's a virgin, Chikage is humiliated and wishes she could turn back time to when she was still young and popular. She takes an experimental drug that changes her appearance back to when she was 15. Now Chikage is determined to pursue everything she missed out on all those years ago-including becoming a star! Abby Cooper is a P.I., psychic intuitive. But her insight failed her when she didn't foresee the death of one of her clients-or that the lead investigator for the case is the gorgeous blind date she just met. Now, with the police suspicious of her abilities and a killer on the loose, Abby's future looks more uncertain than ever. Lindsey Shere, pastry chef at Chez Panisse since 1971, shares How We Learn: Throw Out the Rule Book and Unlock Your Brain's Potential free epub recipes for basic pastries, cookies, cakes, and creams grouped around their dominant ingredient--from apples and berries to dried fruits, chocolate, wine, and spirits. Shirley O Corriher: Bakewise: The Hows and Whys of Successful Baking with Over 200 Magnificent Recipes

Bakewise: The Hows and Whys of Successful Baking with Over 200 Magnificent Recipes

Description

Great day in the morning, `BakeWise` is out! You are holding the book that everyone has been waiting for. Sure enough, Shirley did not hold back -- it's all here. Lively and fascinating, `BakeWise` reads like a mystery novel as we follow sleuth Shirley while she solves everything from why cakes and muffins can be dry to genoise deflation and why the cookie crumbles. With her years of experience from big-pot cooking for 140 teenage boys and her classic French culinary training to her work as a research biochemist at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Shirley manages to put two and two together in unique and exciting ways. Some information is straight out of Shirley's wildly connecting brain cells. She describes useful techniques, such as brushing puff pastry with ice water -- not just brushing off the flour -- making the puff pastry easier to roll. The result? Higher, lighter, and flakier pastry. And you won't find these recipes anywhere else, not even on the Internet. She can help you make moist cakes; flaky pie crusts; shrink-proof perfect meringues that won't leak but still cut like a dream; big, crisp cream puffs; amazing French pastries; light genoise; and crusty, incredibly flavorful, open-textured French breads, such as baguettes and fougasses. There is simply no one like Shirley Corriher. People everywhere recognize her from her TV appearances on the Food Network and `ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live!,` with Snoop Dogg as her fry chef. Restaurant chefs and culinary students know her from their grease-splattered copies of `CookWise,` an encyclopedic work that has saved them from many a cooking disaster. With numerous `At-a-Glance` charts, `BakeWise` gives busy people information for quick problem solving. `BakeWise` also includes Shirley's `What This Recipe Shows` in every recipe. This section is science and culinary information that can apply to hundreds of recipes, not just the one in which it appears. For years, food editors and writers have kept `CookWise,` Shirley's previous book, right by their computers. Now that spot they've been holding for BakeWise can be filled. `BakeWise` does not have just a single source of knowledge; Shirley loves reading the works of chefs and other good cooks and shares their information with you, too. She applies not only her expertise but that of the many artisans she admires, such as famous French pastry chefs Gaston Lenotre and Chef Roland Mesnier, the White House executive pastry chef for twenty-five years; Bruce Healy, author of `Mastering the Art of French Pastry`; and Bonnie Wagner, Shirley's daughter-inlaw's mother. Shirley also retrieves `lost arts` from experts of the past such as Monroe Boston Strause, the pie master of 1930s America. For one dish, she may give you techniques from three or four different chefs plus her own touch ofscience -- `better baking through chemistry.` She adds facts about the right temperature, the right mixing speed, and the right mixing time for the absolutely most stable egg foam, so you can create a light-as-air genoise every time. `BakeWise` is for everyone. Some will read it for the adventure of problem solving with Shirley. Beginners can cook from it and know exactly what they are doing and why. Experienced bakers find out why the techniques they use work and also uncover amazing French pastries out of the past, such as Pont Neuf (a creation of puff pastry, pate a choux, and pastry cream in honor of the Paris bridge) and Religieuses, adorable `little nuns` made of puff pastry filled with a satiny chocolate pastry cream and drizzled with mocha icing to form a nun's habit. Some will want it simply for the recipes -- incredibly moist whipped cream pound cake made with heavy cream whipped slightly beyond the soft-peak stage and folded into the batter; flourless fruit souffles (pureed fruit and Italian meringue); Chocolate Crinkle Cookies, rolled first in granulated sugar and then in confectioners' sugar for a crunchy black-and-snow-white surface with a gooey, fudgy center. And Shirley's popovers are huge

How to Be Idle: A Loafer's Manifesto

Description

From the founding editor of The Idler, the celebrated magazine about the freedom and fine art of doing nothing, comes not simply a book, but an antidote to our work-obsessed culture. In How to Be Idle, Tom Hodgkinson presents his learned yet whimsical argument for a new universal standard of living: being happy doing nothing. He covers a whole spectrum of issues affecting the modern idler sleep, work, pleasure, relationships while reflecting on the writing of such famous apologists for it as Oscar Wilde, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Nietzsche all of whom have admitted to doing their very best work in bed."

Frank Herbert: Dune

Dune

Description

In 1965, after being rejected by more than a dozen publishing houses, a book called "Dune" was brought out by the Chilton Book Company. Its respected author, journalist Frank Herbert, had written "Dune" with nothing more in mind than to entertain his readers with the telling of a particularly complex story, one which had occupied his thoughts for more than six years. No one - not Herbert, not Chilton, not the science fiction community at the time - had any idea that "Dune" would be adopted and read by successive generations with a fervor bordering on cult worship. Or that it would prove to be merely the first of what have now become five international bestsellers about a desert world of the future - the planet Arrakis, called Dune.

This anthology offers a fresh approach to the philosophical aspectsof photography. The essays, written by contemporary philosophers ina thorough and engaging manner, explore the far-reaching ethicaldimensions of photography as it is used today. Principles of Concurrent and Distributed Programming: Algorithms and Models

Description

Principles of Concurrent and Distributed Programming provides an introduction to concurrent programming focusing on general principles and not on specific systems. Software today is inherently concurrent or distributed -- from event-based GUI designs to operating and real-time systems to Internet applications. The new edition of this classic introduction to concurrency has been completely revised in view of the growing importance of concurrency constructs embedded in programming languages and of formal methods such as model checking that are widely used in industry.

I feel its approach, Inevitable as death: Internet dating. Unsolicited relationship advice from relatives, disastrous dates, men who wear thumb rings, and the moments of deep satisfaction when a single girl realizes that (unlike her smug married friends) she can do whatever she wants with her time - it's all here in this brilliantly incisive and witty collection of haikus. Every Principles of Concurrent and Distributed Programming: Algorithms and Models download book woman - whether single or not - will laugh until she cries, and then start laughing all over again. The map includes the locations of cities and towns with a user-friendly index, plus a clearly marked road network complete with distances and designations for major highways, main roads, and tracks and trails for those seeking to explore more remote regions. "A controversial, moving, and courageous book; narrative history at its best. "From the Hardcover edition.""

Emile Zola,Roger Pearson: La Bete Humaine

La Bete Humaine

Description

Did possessing and killing amount to the same thing deep within the dark recesses of the human beast? La Bete humaine (1890), is one of Zola's most violent and explicit works. On one level a tale of murder, passion and possession, it is also a compassionate study of individuals derailed by atavistic forces beyond their control. Zola considered this his 'most finely worked' novel, and in it he powerfully evokes life at the end of the Second Empire in France, where society seemed to be hurtling into the future like the new locomotives and railways it was building. While expressing the hope that human nature evolves through education and gradually frees itself of the burden of inherited evil, he is constantly reminding us that under the veneer of technological progress there remains, always, the beast within. This new translation captures Zola's fast-paced yet deliberately dispassionate style, while the introduction and detailed notes place the novel in its social, historical, and literary context. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Imagist Poetry download book

Peter Jones: Imagist Poetry

Imagist Poetry

Description

Imagism was a brief, complex yet influential poetic movement of the early 1900s, a time of reaction against late nineteenth-century poetry which Ezra Pound, one of the key imagist poets, described as 'a doughy mess of third-hand Keats, Wordsworth ...half-melted, lumpy'. In contrast, imagist poetry, although riddled with conflicting definitions, was broadly characterized by brevity, precision, purity of texture and concentration of meaning: as Pound stated, it should 'use no superfluous word, no adjective, which does not reveal something ...it does not use images as ornaments. The image itself is the speech'. It was this freshness and directness of approach which means that, as Peter Jones says in his invaluable Introduction, 'imagistic ideas still lie at the centre of our poetic practice'.

In fact, Tanner argues, the new orientation in cultural theory and anthropology affords fresh opportunities for religious thought and opens new vistas for theology, especially on how Christians conceive of the theological task, theological diversity and inculturation, and even Christianity's own cultural identity.
